2018 AUDI A7 SPORTBACK

The new Audi A7 Sportback adapts the formula of the outgoing car to make a more resolved and desirable package. Not only is the design more cohesive and appealing, but it’s also lighter and better to drive. The interior also moves the game on in terms of design and technology, with a range of clever autonomous features and slick displays to justify the A7’s high-end market position.

The A7’s petrol and diesel engines are strong performers and, thanks to new mild hybrid tech, the official economy figures are impressive. The drive majors on maturity, refinement and composure, although that means it isn’t as engaging to drive as a Porsche Panamera. The ride on air suspension is a bit inconsistent, too – you’d have to test drive it both on springs and air to find your preference. But despite these foibles, there’s no doubting that the A7 is a more appealing prospect than the previous model.

The German car brands are the undisputed experts of niche-filling. Audi, Mercedes and BMW have a number of cars that straddle different segments and even act as rivals to their own siblings. Taking a traditional bodystyle and turning it into a ‘coupe’ is the on-trend brand extension of the moment – from SUVs and crossovers to saloons, nothing is immune from the addition of that sloping roof look.

The first A7 Sportback, launched in 2010, was the second of Audi’s four-door coupes after the A5. It’s designed to bridge the gap between the A6 and A8 saloons, while offering a slightly sportier and more style focused option to buyers who find the traditional four-door choices a bit undesirable.

In 2018 Audi launched the second generation model, based on an evolution of the brand’s MLB Evo platform shared with the new A8. It’s got a longer wheelbase than before and the design has evolved, but the overall theme is unchanged. It’s more of a large grand tourer than an all-out sports coupe. Rivals are, unsurprisingly, of the Germanic variety and include the Mercedes CLS, the old but still competitive BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, and the all-new Porsche Panamera.

2018 Porsche Panamera

The 2018 Porsche Panamera gets a new wagon body style called the Sport Turismo and a new range-topping variant known as the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

Vehicle Summary

The 2018 Porsche Panamera is available in hatchback or wagon body styles and in either rear- or all-wheel drive configurations. In addition to the standard gas-powered models’ there are two hybrid variants available, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. There’s also a long-wheelbase variant for the Panamera hatchback, which adds extra leg room and cargo capacity.
The 2018 Porsche Panamera does nearly all the things all the time—and even more this year. It’s the 911 of sedans, just as Porsche intended it to be, and in our eyes it rates 8.4 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

There are a staggering 15 models from which to choose: base cars, all-wheel-drive Panamera 4 and 4S cars, long-wheelbase Executive cars, Turbos, 4 E-Hybrids, and Turbo S E-Hybrids, some of which are available as Sport Turismos.

For 2018, Porsche filled out the Panamera lineup with a bevvy of new models that start under $90,000, but in true Porsche fashion can rise to triple that. The range begins at an impressive enough 330 horsepower in the new Panamera and all-wheel drive Panamera 4. From there, the S models boast 440 hp and can hit 60 mph from a stop in as little as 4.0 seconds. The Panamera Turbo ups things to 550 hp from its boosted V-8.
