Audi S8 v Audi S3 v Audi A8 – DRAG RACE

It’s time for a three-way Audi showdown! The S8 D2 was one of the fastest performance cars around back in 2001, but can it still hold its own against the newer S3 and A8 50 TDI?! What do you think will happen?

Audi S8

Mechanically, the 2001 S8 varies little from the A8L—boasting all of the A8’s features including its innovative aluminum space frame and Quattro all-wheel-drive system. What sets the two apart is that the S8 is heck of a lot faster. With 360 bhp at 7000 rpm and buckets-full of torque—317 lb.-ft. at 3400—the S8 engine is the most powerful production powerplant Audi has ever made (at least until it begins production on the W-12 unveiled at the Paris auto show).

engineers thoroughly massaged the company’s 4.2-liter 40-valve V-8 to get the desired bump in power (16 percent). They also significantly improved the engine’s low- and mid-range punch, with 90 percent of peak torque now available at 2000 rpm. Among the changes were new intake and exhaust manifolds, new camshafts with higher lift and a revised valve-timing system.

Audi S3

In the Audi S3 models, the 2.0 TFSI produces 228 kW (310 hp) and in combination with the speed manual gearbox delivers 380 Nm (280.3 lb-ft) of torque between 1,850 and 5,700 rpm. With the optional S tronic, torque increases to 400 Nm (295.0 lb-ft) between 2,000 and 5,400 rpm. NEDC fuel consumption for the Audi S3 Sportback with S tronic is 6.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (36.2 US mpg). The Audi development engineers further improved the steering characteristic and exhaust system management, making the Audi S3 Sportback, Audi S3 Sedan and Audi S3 Cabriolet very dynamic.

Equipped with the optional seven-speed S tronic (standard in the Cabriolet), which comes with a freewheeling function, the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) takes just 4.6 seconds in the Audi S3 Sportback and the Audi S3 Sedan, and 5.1 seconds in the Audi S3 Cabriolet. With a manual transmission (not available in the Cabriolet), the sprint time increases by seven-tenths of a second. The models’ top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155.3 mph).
